Stone Town Tour
The Stone Town Tour begins at a central location in Zanzibar Stone Town. This is a fascinating excursion that winds through narrow bustling streets and alleyways to the fish market and former slave markets, consulates, the Old Fort, the House of Wonders and other historical sites. On the way you will have a chance to walk around the narrow streets of Stone Town where most of the houses date back more than 150 years. You will see many bazaars, curio shops, restaurants, and variety of stores selling souvenirs.
Steeped in history, Stone Town in Zanzibar was once the biggest business center of East Africa. In it’s earlier days it was the hub for trading ivory, spices and slaves. Power has changed hands numerous times over the years; the Portuguese, Arabs, Sultans of Oman and English have all had their influence on this unique and fascinating town which has created an incredible mix of architecture and culture. It is a fascinating look into the history and culture that has shaped this island and is something that should not be missed.
Spice Tour
The perfect chance to learn everything you have ever wanted to know about spices! Our guide will take you to spice farms and plantations all over the island where you can see and taste the variety of spices found in Zanzibar. A Zanzibar spice tour is a sensory experience and you’ll be introduced to cinnamon, ylang-ylang, nutmeg and vanilla in their raw forms. The guides will educate you on each spice while local children follow you on the tour handing you palm-leaf accessories such as ties, rings, bracelets and glasses.
Zanzibar is famed for being the spice island due to it’s history of growing and exporting spices to the four corners of the world. The tastes, smells and uses for the spices will surpise you; some are used for treating wounds while others add an extra kick to any meal.
Visiting Jazari Forest
This is a guided tour, which takes 3 hours to the Jozani Forest. The Forest is the only remaining natural vegetation. It is a home of many endemic species of fauna and flora. Here you will see the red colubus monkey, velvet cats, a variety of small trees, shrubs, swamps and grasses. When walk through the mangrove board you will see prawns, and different species of mangroves.
The forest has an area of 2512 hectares, that includes the whole ground water forest, coral rag forest and salt marsh area. Though until recently, only the forest was gazetted, the area together with the adjacent Chwaka Bay forest have been converted into a reserve known as Jozani Chwaka Bay Conservation Area (JCBCA).
Jozani Forest is located approximately 35 km southeast of Zanzibar township in the southern region. It is a narrow neck between Chwaka Bay in the north and Uzi Bay to the South. It contains about 100 species of trees
Visiting Prison Island
Earning its name as a former prison for slaves and a quarantine station for Zanzibar and the mainland nowadays the island gives you the chance to escape for some peace and quiet. The island lies just off the Old Stone Town and is home to giant tortoises that were imported from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. It is fringed with a beautiful coral reef, ideal for snorkeling, and has a lovely white beach for sunbathing.
The island is ideal for a day trip with refreshments available throughout the day. It also has a small restaurant where you can enjoy freshly caught fish.
Changuu is a small island with an intense history. It lies 3 ½ miles to the northwest of the Stone Town of Zanzibar and it is oblong in shape about ½ mile long and 250 yards broad at the widest point. All over the island, there are a number of coral pits, which are disused quarries from digging coral for building on Zanzibar Stone Town along the centuries.
One large quarry site at the back side of the island is used as a natural swimming pool at which it is not unusual to swim with Green and Hawksbill sea turtles
Diving and Fishing
A special treat that the Frati Safaris crew love putting together is our Zanzibar ‘Seafari’. This is a full-day excursion that takes you out into the Mnemba Atoll, where you have the chance to spot turtles, dolphins and other incredible marine life while snorkelling for hours. The afternoon ends with a delicious seafood & bbq on board the dhow. You may even see the majestic whale sharks that migrate past the island twice a year or a pod of rare humpback dolphins that have been sighted several times.
